The Station Volunteer Program engages volunteers across Victoria to beautify station precincts across the metropolitan and regional rail network.

Station Volunteers play a crucial role in transforming rail precincts into welcoming, attractive community spaces.

These dedicated individuals and groups engage in various hands-on activities, including planting, weeding, mulching, removing litter, and general garden maintenance, to beautify the station surrounds.

Beyond the aesthetic improvements, this volunteer work fosters a strong sense of community spirit, provides social connection for participants, and can contribute to a safer, more pleasant environment for commuters.

Our volunteers come from all walks of life and diverse backgrounds, sharing a common passion for gardening, nature, and community engagement.

  • About the program

The Station Volunteer Program is a collaborative effort between VicTrack, Metro Trains Melbourne, V/Line and the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP), who have provided funding to the program since 2008.

VicTrack manages the delivery of the program on behalf of the transport partners.

Our mission is to enhance the character and atmosphere of Victoria’s railway precincts through the tireless efforts of our dedicated volunteers.

By engaging in local beautification projects, these groups ensure our stations remain welcoming spaces for all commuters.

    • Community impact: We aim to foster a deep sense of local pride and ownership through social and creative activities that strengthen community identity.

    • Metro and regional support: Metro Trains Melbourne and V/Line continue to support regional and metro volunteer groups across the state, contributing to a network that now includes 47 active groups statewide.

    • Safety and support: All volunteers are provided with essential safety training, protective equipment, and public liability insurance to ensure they can work safely within the rail environment.

    • Expanding our reach: We are actively growing this program and welcome new members who wish to help transform their local station.
