Regional Rail Link

As part of our role in helping to grow and build Victoria’s public transport network, we played an integral part in the delivery of the Regional Rail Link (RRL) project, which was completed in 2015.

RRL was a commonwealth and state government project to construct a major new rail line, and provide dedicated tracks for regional trains through the metropolitan system between Sunshine and Southern Cross Station.

The project included building a new regional train route between West Werribee and Deer Park, including two new stations at Tarneit and Wyndham Vale, and upgrading Footscray, West Footscray and Sunshine stations.

Our role was to support the delivery of the project using our capabilities as the railway land manager and telecommunications provider.

Our railway land management responsibilities included facilitating access to railway land as well as advising on environmental land management requirements during construction.

Our telecommunications role included approving designs for the telecommunications component of the project and supervising all works, to ensure the protection of the existing network. We also installed all required fibre optic cable for telecommunications and signalling systems, which provide voice/data services to railway operators at stations.

Now the project is complete, VicTrack owns, manages and operates the telecommunications infrastructure, including fibre used for signalling, on behalf of the state.

The project was managed by the Regional Rail Link Authority.
