Regional Rail Connectivity

Passengers will get better mobile coverage on Victoria’s five busiest regional rail lines - Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Traralgon and Seymour - which see more than 15.5 million passenger trips annually.

The Victorian Government has partnered with Telstra, Vodafone and Optus to construct up to 35 new mobile towers with cutting edge in-train technology to significantly improve coverage for passengers.

VicTrack is a key partner in the delivery of this priority project that will boost connectivity and productivity for thousands of commuters every day.

The first mobile towers have already been built, and the in train technology tested.

The testing demonstrated that mobile coverage will improve from less than 50 per cent currently to almost full network coverage on the five rail lines with the installation of the in-train mobile coverage booster coupled with up to 35 new mobile towers.

Mobile coverage will improve as the technology is rolled out throughout 2018, with the entire VLocity fleet will be complete by the end of the year.

Passengers will experience a vast improvement in their level of connectivity whilst travelling on regional rail services.
