Karen Shaw
Senior Project Manager

Moving to VicTrack from a role managing residential property was the first time I’d had anything to do with rail. I felt like a complete novice. But from day one, my VicTrack colleagues welcomed me with open arms, and I knew that I belonged here.

In my eight years with VicTrack I’ve had three different roles. I started as Group Support Officer, helping a team of project managers with their reporting.

After two years in that role, I was encouraged to apply for a promotion to become a Project Manager and was successful.

Within two years I was promoted again to Senior Project Manager.

I have worked on some major transport infrastructure projects including building new commuter car parks at railway stations.

I love that my work brings improved community benefits in the transport sector across Victoria.

I’m grateful that my managers have seen potential in me that I hadn’t realised myself. They have always encouraged me on my career path and to seize opportunities.

With the support of VicTrack, I have also completed two diploma courses, achieved Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) certification, and became a mental health first aider and a health and safety representative.

The culture of recognition and celebrating success is central to life at VicTrack.

I was thrilled to receive one of our annual VicTrack Awards, but just as important is feeling valued by management and colleagues on a regular basis simply from feedback.

VicTrack’s flexible work arrangements mean I can manage my work with other life commitments.

Flexible work enables me to prioritise better, be more organised and still connect with colleagues in the office.

It also means I can focus on work and be present for my children and look after myself too.
