Surplus VicTrack land unlocked for housing

10 April 2025

Surplus VicTrack land in Bendigo and Geelong will be unlocked to help deliver new homes in regional Victoria, as part of the Victorian Government’s Housing Statement.

The parcels of land are among six government-owned sites to be unlocked under the second tranche of the Small Sites program that will see government land used to deliver up to 350 homes close to jobs, transport, education and services.

The VicTrack land has been identified as suitable for new homes close to existing schools, hospitals, jobs, and transport..

The VicTrack land – located on McLaren Street in Bendigo and McCurdy Road in Herne Hill, Geelong – has been identified as suitable for new homes close to existing schools, hospitals, jobs, and transport.

An Expression of Interest (EOI) campaign will be run, seeking interest from developers with experience in delivering apartment and townhouse developments.

In November 2024, VicTrack invited expressions of interest (EOI) from property developers to build homes on rail land at Footscray and Oakleigh stations – at sites close to public transport and existing services – with the potential to deliver around 240 homes.

EOI submissions have been evaluated and shortlisted developers have been asked to take part in Request for Proposal (RfP) process.

The successful bidders will determine the type of housing offered at each site and will be required to start construction within 18 months.
